This article addresses fictionality in relation to general theories of communication,
and speech act theory in particular. It argues that fictionality
may be seen as a result of an indirect speech act, an idea first exercised
by Gérard Genette, then repudiated by Richard Walsh. I reason that the
flaws pointed out |

by Walsh are not, in fact, inherent in a concept of indirect
speech acts. The article contents that indirect speech explains why
the concept of truthfulness is crucial for fictionality, and accounts for the
importance of the intention of the communicator and the expectations of the recipient.
